Ebook About This book serves as an important companion to Freire's seminal work, providing powerful insights into both a philosophically sound and politically inspired understanding of Freire's book, supporting application of his pedagogy in enacting emancipatory educational programs in the world today. Antonia Darder closely examines Freire's ideas as they are articulated in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, beginning with a historical discussion of Freire's life and a systematic discussion of the central philosophical traditions that informed his revolutionary ideas. She engages and explores Freire's fundamental themes and ideas, including the issues of humanization, the teacher/student relationship, reflection, dialogue, praxis, and his larger emancipatory vision. Questions are included throughout Chapter 3, Reading the Text Chapter-by-Chapter, to enable greater discussion of, and engagement with, the text itself. The book includes an incisive interview with Freire's widow, Ana Maria Araujo Freire. The bibliography offers invaluable support to those looking to read and study other works by Paulo Freire.Book The Student Guide to Freire's 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' Review :
I am teacher educator at a public university in Los Angeles. As part of my work, I find myself responsible for facilitating discussions about Pedagogy of the Oppressed with novice teachers. While many teachers find Freire's book useful for helping them reflect on the oppressive structures of schools and transform their classrooms, they often find his ideas complex and overwhelming. In preparation for this work, I have consulted several books that have been useful in defining Freire’s themes and make connections teachers' classroom contexts. Antonia Darder's student guide however is significantly better than all the sources I have consulted. The book is aimed at a general reader who is interested in the topic of education and schools but does not have background in the work of Freire and the extensive literature referenced in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The initial chapter on the biography of his Freire is important in understanding how his life experiences shaped his work and lead to the theories in the book. In the next chapters, she then examines each of the chapters in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. I really appreciated how Darder identifies the major themes in each chapter, provides a definition and background information for the authors used to conceptualize the theme. Rather than trying to find all the sources cited, Darder provides a wonderful summary of the authors/theories/themes identified in each chapter. I see your book being used in introduction courses in education, philosophy, theology, social work, sociology, and ethnic studies. The language in the book is accessible enough that I can also see it being used in high school classrooms and community education. This is the definitive resource for understanding the ideas in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This book has shaped my teaching. I’m so thankful it was required for my undergrad program and I wish more teachers had thw opportunity to read it in that context. It’s difficult to read without talking about it with others, and I think Freire would be okay with that.
